Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are much safer than over-the-counter drugs and chemicals, but it’s still important to know what you’re doing and that some concerns exist. While yes, they natural and plant-derived, it's worth doing a bit of research before using them in your home. As discussed, in a previous blog essential oils are high volatile, and it can take up to 100 pounds of bulk herb to create a single pound of essential oils. The safety of using any essential oil depends largely on the person using it. Certain essential oils can contribute to skin irritation, respiratory symptoms and even cause reactions with some medications.

For Example

·      Chamomile can help you relax but people with allergies to ragweed, daisies and other plants may have a bad reaction.

·      Burch, oil contains high levels of methyl salicylate and should be used cautiously with those taking a anticoagulant (blood thinners).

                 Safety Guidelines

·     Stop using that essential oil is if gives you allergy symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing or water eyes.

·     Always do patch test before using an essential oil topically. To perform a patch test, place a diluted drop of oil onto a small portion of your skin. If you develop dermatologic symptoms, wash it off and don't use that oil on your skin.

·     When diffusing around pets make sure that oil or blends is pet friendly and always make sure the pet has a way to leave the room is the scent bothers them.

While recommended dilution ratios depend on the specific situation and use, is generally best to stay with a two or three percent dilution ratio.
